Gaim 2.0.0beta6 is out!

Yesterday, Gaim 2.0.0beta6 was released. I'm about to try it out.
If you haven't heard about the 2.0 release, there's lots of big changes. The most important to me is the core/ui split allowing for more UIs to be built off of the libgaim base.
Check out the changelog if you're interested in all the new changes and go to http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ to download it.

IsoHunt is taken down! :(

From their website:

"Lawyers from our primary ISP decided to pull our plug without any advance notice, as of 14:45 PST. No doubt related to our lawsuit brought by the MPAA, but we don't have more information at this time until people responsible comes to work tomorrow. We will be back in operation once we sort out this mess with our current ISP, or we get new hardware ready at our new ISP."

Poor guys. Hope they get back up soon

DCOMbobulator from GRC

I've never been much of a fan of GRC, but I was browsing their site today and found this tool, DCOMbobulator. It's freeware and disables the DCOM service from your Windows XP box. You most likely don't need the DCOM service running, and Windows doesn't like to let you disable it on your own sometimes. I'd recommend going to the above site and read about the program, then download it and disable DCOM on your system. Here's a direct link to the download.

Islands for Sale, Real Estate, Private Islands

Islands for Sale, Real Estate, Private Islands

Reading about The Pirate Bay wanting to buy Sealand the other day, it made me want to buy my own island. This website lists quite a few islands for sale if you're interested ;)
There's even some for around $50,000 USD.

Robot Chicken: Grand Theft Mario

Mario and Luigi accidentally drive into the world of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This isn't just another "Mario in GTA" spoof, it's an extremely funny Robot Chicken sketch. That speaks for itself, I reckon. :)

Color Chooser (Interactive Color Scheme Chooser)

I was stumbling using the stumbleupon toolbar and found this tool. It lets you pick a colour and it'll tell you that color's complimentary colours. Very useful for web designers to pick a scheme. I'll be using it.

The applet was too big to embed here, so click the link below to go to the site.

CCleaner ( Crap Cleaner) mini how to

From the website :
"CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization tool. That removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less that a second to run) and Free. :) "

CCleaner is one of my favorite tools for windows xp now. It's a great little program to clear unneeded space from your harddrive(s). This is a mini how-to for it.
  1. Launch the program from the start menu, desktop, or right clicking the recycle bin.
  2. Click on "Options" on the left
  3. Here you can choose your method of deletion. I personally just use the normal mode, but if you're paranoid feel free to use the DoD/NSA secure deletion. They take longer to delete your files but will make it harder for someone to recover deleted files.
  4. Click on "Cookies". Select any cookies you don't want deleted and click the ">" button to move them to the right column. I usually keep the cookies for some forums and other sites I want to stay logged in.
  5. Also you can click "Custom" and add a folder to be deleted everytime CCleaner is run. If you have a program that saves a cache or temporary files somewhere that isn't already detected by CCleaner then this is the place to add it.
  6. Now click on "Cleaner" and you should be back to the main screen.
  7. Go through the checklist here, and then click the Applications tab. Check everything that you want to be deleted. About the only thing I have unchecked is my browser history and saved forms.
  8. Make sure Firefox is closed, then click "Run Cleaner"
  9. After it's done you'll get something similiar to below (but with more results if you've never run this before)
If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Blog name - Uninformative Tashings?

So. Don't get used to the name. I have no idea what to call it. I don't think I want to even keep it hosted on blogspot, but with my lack of money right now I think it's fine. I just moved in to a new apartment, and don't really have a job yet so I'm pretty poor :)

Give me ideas for a name! Or suffer with poorly chosen names.

"Carry your life on a thumb drive" from lifehacker

I found an old Lifehacker article about using your thumb drive to basically carry a portable workstation with you wherever you go.

And I wanted to try this Performancing blog editor thing..

From the article:

"...When I think back to the first computer I had with a hard drive bigger than a gigabyte ("I'll never run out of space now!") I have to laugh. Nowadays you can get 8 gigabytes of disk hanging on your key ring, not to mention all the gigabytage we tote around on our iPods.

Portable applications and creative uses for USB drives and other external hard drives have come a long way in the last year or so. Today I'll go over some of the more practical uses and techniques for managing your data on the go with a portable drive.

A few scenarios where a USB drive - or iPod - loaded with your favorite applications and important documents might come in handy:
